Friday, August 17, 2007Heavy selling pressure drove the Hang Seng Index down by more than 700 points yesterday, as many investors headed for the exit, fearing an extension of the subprime mortgage crisis into the US commercial paper market.

"The downward spiral of stock indexes is established. Stop hoping it will turn for the better," wrote a blogger calling himself "Dr 168 the Great." Long-term corrections in global equity markets were expected after capital injections from central banks failed to revive indexes, the blogger said.

The large amount of capital injected by banks - seen as an indicator of the seriousness of the subprime problem - has failed to revive investor confidence in equity markets.
